Hello, my name is Karen. I’m a Nutrition Coach. I am learning sign. I’m in my 4th week of ASL 101. I want to learn to communicate with my deaf and hard of hearing athletes, stay tuned!

I’m a student for life. Not just in the health/wellness/fitness/crossfit world, but with “life” as a whole. Recently I have had (and still do) the pleasure to coach (fitness & nutrition) a few deaf and hard of hearing athletes and man have I learned so much…and thank heavens they are super patient with me. In an effort to communicate better I signed (no pun intended) up for ASL 101 at Texas School For The Deaf and I LOOOOOVE it! Classes are on Thursday night at 5:30pm and are super casual. My instructor, Karen Henry, is AMAZING and funny! We sit in tables around a projector and go through lessons. We follow a book, but I always write down words I want to learn so I can look them up and practice them at home. Two things/sites/apps I use to help learn and practice are: (1) Dr. Bill Vicars with Lifeprint.com on YouTube and (2) Sign Savvy online & app. There are a lot more useful things out there but y’all know my moto, “Keep It Simple”. So until I can manage the basics I’m not going to get too crazy.

I’m REALLY enjoying my class and plan on continuing. I want to be able to use this skill/form of communication in the health and wellness world to help those that “stand back” or are afraid due to lack of ability to communicate. I also look forward to sharing my adventures!
