This past weekend I got to train/compete at a BEAUTIFUL (can you use “beautiful” when describing a gym?…oh well) studio/gym. Ben House (@ApacheAthlete), founder/creator of #ApacheAthlete and his lovely wife Steph Gongora (@Casa_Colibri) have built an awesome studio on their land, his gym is below and her yoga studio (I apologize Steph if this isn’t the correct reference to your space, LOL) is above. The #GenderEquality competition we did was in the gym below. Back up…#GenderEquality…Ben did a great job at using a multiplier (.66…but I could be wrong) to make the male female weights even. So the whole comp we competed with the guys. There was no male female winner…just 1 athlete. I thought that was kinda neato!

GEComp

Once everyone “signed up” Ben (and Teo) drew names out of a hat and put the athletes into teams for the different events. So before arriving I knew Keli, Erin and myself made up Team 6! After we got there Taylor was added…YES ALL GIRLS TEAM!!!!

GETay

When we arrived at 8:15am, there were already people there warming up and socializing. Most of the athletes I already knew and those that I didn’t I became friends with quickly. This made for an awesome atmosphere to compete in! Yes we were put into teams BUT it was like we were one big team…everyone cheered everyone on, it was awesome…prob why there were so many PRs! Team 1 went then Team 2 followed in when they were done. The events went like so…

Event 1:

12 min to Establish a 1RM Snatch

*Power and Split are acceptable.

3 min Transition/Warm-up for Event 2

Taylor and I shared a bar and Erin and Keli shared a bar. These girls were perfect to lift with! I finished with a snatch of 155# which is matching my PR…I haven’t matched my PR in who knows how long! Taylor also hit 155# which is a 5# PR for her AND then I watched her get under 160# 3 different times! It was awesome!!! Still on a high from Event 1, we entered Event 2

GETayMiss

Event 2:

12 min to Establish a 3RM Front Squat

*Weight must start from the floor and squats must be to depth.

3 min Transition/Warm-up for Events 3 and 4

Since Taylor and I both don’t like taking things overhead, this was perfect for us! LOL! We quickly got heavy…it was awesome! I did 215#…so I PRed my clean and then front squatted it 2x! I then attempted to do #220, but under it but couldn’t’ stand it up, but its there! Taylor blew passed me! She killed #220 and then cleaned #225 (10#PR) then front squatted it 1x…it was awesome! CLEARLY Taylor won this event, even beating the men/guys/males….CONGRATS! On to the next…

Events 3 and 4: Vertical Pull and Push

12 min to Establish:

3RM Weighted Strict PullUp (Any Grip)

*Score is external load not system load

Max Strict HSPU (25s/Floor, females ab mat)

*The Athlete can not break for more than 5 sec on any one rep at the top of the bottom. Legs and hips must stay locked and both feet must be under control touching the wall at the top of each rep.

**Teams 1 and 2 will enter first. Once they complete Event 2. Teams 3 and 4 will take the platforms and so worth until all 6 teams have finished.

Well this wasn’t my exact strengths. I pulled out my 10# weighted vest and started there…as well as the other girls. I finished with 50#. I honestly think I could have done more but but time ran out, oh well. Next we had to do HSPUs. Alyson in Team 1 set the bar high with 47 strict HSPUs…no I’m not kidding. Well I wanted to do half of that. Girls were lucky we just had the ab mat on the ground. Part of me wanted to add 25 plates because that is what I would see at regionals but I changed my mind. I got 29 and it burned so I was okay with that. We then rested and watched the other teams start to take on the next event.

Event 5 and 6:
  Lone Survivor 1 and 2

TEN – 1min AMRAPs of
10 Lateral Burpees to Plate
10 Thrusters (75/55)

Rest 30 sec

*If at any time an athlete does not complete 1 full round  (20 reps) in 55 seconds. They are eliminated.

**The first metric is the number reps completed in the first AMRAP. The second metric is the total number of reps completed in the entire workout.

I was super pumped about this workout…soooo in my wheel house! Burpees and Thrusters…all you gotta do is keep going. This event had 2 scores, 1 was for the number of reps in the 1st round and the 2nd score was the number of reps overall. Meaning you had to hit at least 20 reps to move on to the next minute, but you could hit more. 3-2-1 Go I went after it, stayed low on the burpees and let my arms rest as I went over the plate, then I went straight into the thrusters and back to burpees if I had time. I managed to get any where between 23-29 (I think) reps each time thanks to the 30second rest. I finished with 197 reps total

After all the scores were in, only the top 6 moved on to the final event. It was during this time he announced the winners thus far:

Team 1 – 1st, Todd W. (6th), Teo L. (5th), Taylor (5th), Ben H. (3rd), Ben L. (2nd), KP (1st)

Since I was in 1st after the 1st round of events AND I had banked some extra points I technically didn’t have to do event 7 and could have still won, BUT what fund would that be? I opted for us to play “winner takes all”!  I got to pick out of a hat what event 7 would be. I drew “King Kong” and no, it wasn’t on that list…but that’s okay because I LOVE “King Kong”. Ben had 3 weight options to pick from. Like Fittest Games you got scored on weight choice and completion time. I quickly asked Ben L what he was going to be doing since he was my competition, he said option 3 (heaviest). He said DL was his weakness BUT he could do Muscle Ups (great.). We went in 3 heats of 2. Taylor and Tood, Ben and Teo and then Ben L. and myself. I did chose option 3 (305# Deadlift and 165# clean). Like always I knew I had to go fast on the other movements because muscle ups are my weakness (getting better but still a weakness).

GEMU

I called time at 2:45pm and Ben called time shortly there after. Which left me at 1st place!

GEPodium

Ben took the entry fees used it as prize money…meaning he made NOTHING off this comp…and there was 3 different holes put into his wall. Each member of the winning team walked away with money, 1 athlete was selected as the “Dog Chain” (ask Ben to explain) and he walked away with money and I walked away with a chunk of change and an AWESOME #ApacheAthlete shirt (by @V23Athleteics) Below are the Final Scores of the #GenderEquality Event! HUGE thanks to Ben (and Steph) for hosting us this was a great event with a great atmosphere. I enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you for including me…when is the next one, I’m in!

Just a quick shout out to Rabah Rahil for getting me into the comp! No matter the size or intensity of the competition, its ALWAYS good to have you cheer/coach/encourage me and just have YOU on my side. Maybe one day I’ll be able to out snatch you.
