This morning I got up and had breakfast at the hotel. It was interesting. There were normal things, then there were things like this odd piece of fruit. I’m not sure what it is, but I’m open to trying out the weird. It was very good, but a lot of work to get to.
I also took a few pics from the little porch they have set up for lounging or eating. I’m in a nice hotel and behind me is POVERTY! It is mind blowing. I clearly scream tourist, because a gentleman walked out and asked me where I was from (in english). I told him and he responded “different huh”. YIKES!
I have made a friend at the front desk. He speaks english and is active and must work a ton because he was there when I came home last night and he was there this morning. Same with the taxi/shuttle drivers…they were there last night and this morning. Anywhoo…they took me to Crossfit506 so I could start my Olympic Lift Cert. I entered met a guy named Blanco who informed me that the cert is all in Spanish, NOT english…gulp. I was told both. He said it says that but it is going to be given in Spanish but super nice and said if I have questions not to hesitate to ask him. Again it was super “eyes on deck”. Listening with my eyes I again was reminded how IMPORTANT demos are. Every once in awhile people would chime in and let me know what the Coaches were saying (I must have looked REALLY lost then). We also had to break up into groups and teach each other moves, knowing spanish would have come in handy here, again thank goodness for demos 🙂 To make a long story short I did fine, everyone was helpful and I survived day one…bring it on Day 2!
I made it back to my hotel before dark (something I didn’t do yesterday). I read somewhere that you have to be careful in San Jose when venturing out. From my understanding, the boxes I attended were in a really nice area that has lots of money. The boxes were def top notch boxes. At CF506 they even had a guy who was always on hand, picking up and handing out stuff like PVC Pipes…side note: they use bamboo sticks instead of PVC pipes….clips and then always cleaning the floors. It was awesome! Tonight I plan on going to bed early because I have day 2 of Oly Lift Cert then I’m headed to my next adventure, so stay tuned!
Just a few things I have learned today:
- You don’t tip the taxi drivers or the waiter
- Crossfit is VERY new here…boxes are popping up…there might be 5ish in Costa Rica
- Crossfit Reebok is the “lulu” here. I’m out because I don’t have my nanos on.
