Dani Johnson: Gems
If you are just tuning in, I’m breaking down my notes from a two day Dani Johnson Seminar I went to in 2011. Seven years later I still refer back to my notes for business tips and advice. I’m breaking down my 21 pages of chicken scratch to share with you to help you grow as a person and in the business world for which ever industry you are in.
This hands down was my most favorite thing to learn from the seminar…and I learned A LOT of cool things in those two days. I’ll tell you about each “gem” then tell you how you can apply the principle to your business (aghh I’m so excited to write about this). Everyone can be categorized as a “gem”. You can be more than one, but you will have a dominant one. There are four gems: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald & Pearl. Here are the descriptions of each:
Ruby
- Have to be first
- Motivated by money
- Strong
- Powerful
- Take charge
- Risk taker
- Action yesterday
- likes fast cars and jets
- Can be bought

- Creative
- Knows lots of people
Sapphire
- LOUD (including clothes)
- Likes Dealing with people
- Pot stir-er
- Loves excitement
- Always late
- Trendy
- Life of the party
- No plans
- Unorganized and doesn’t care

- Community
So far so good? Am I making sense? Have you diagnosed yourself yet? I am a ruby with a side of emerald. Sometimes I want to be a sapphire, but I’m waaayyy to self diagnosed OCD for that to happen. Since this isn’t exactly something you would put on your resume, how do you apply it to business? Once you have figured out what your client/customer/patient is…its easy to speak their language. Lets say you want everyone to come to your fitness competition/race you are hosting. its going to be a big event you are raising money for a special cause and you want everyone to come. Here is how you can use the “gems” to speak a person’s language and invite them to the event:
If I were to invite a ruby:
Hey Karen, Living Amped is hosting this great competition and I wanted to invite you to come. The event is on Saturday, May 20th at The Pavillion. The main part of the event is this fitness competition. I know you have been working hard on your squats and rumor has it there might be a 1 Rep Max Squat part in it, but you didn’t hear it from me. My gut says there is a good chance you could podium and take home a great swag bag. Registration is $50 and it opens up tomorrow, I would love to see you out there showing everyone how hard you have been training. Let me know if you have any questions!
Remember Rubys are UBER competitive, they like to win and they are always in go mode…they also like to be seen winning. So when I invited her to the event I focused on those things. I spoke her language and used words that she would find attractive. Since rubys are in a hurry and on to the next thing, they like to read bullet points, therefore I bolded the important parts. If a ruby read this email and they skimmed over it, they would get the important parts.
If I were to invite an emerald to the event:
Hey Karen, Living Amped is hosting a great event on Saturday, May 20th at The Pavilion (address). Our goal is to raise $10k to donate to the cause (link to cause). All funds from entry fees and raffle tickets will be donated to the cause. We will have a competition in the morning followed by a BBQ afterwards. Heat 1 will starts at 8am and the BBQ will start at 12pm. You can view heats here (link). I know you have been working on your squats and rumor has it, there might be a 1 rep max rep portion. It would be a great way to set a new PR and show off your hard work! Registration is $50. You can register by going here (link). I would love to see you compete and think you would really surprise yourself at your abilities!
Totally different right? WAY more details on the event. No need to highlight. Emeralds like data and numbers so they want to know the exact time and place of the event. When the first heat starts. When the BBQ starts. How much is registration. Where I can they get more info (hints all the links). They are like the popular nerd.
If I were to invite a sapphire:
WHATS UP KP!!!!! Living Amped is hosting this awesome party on Saturday, May 20th at The Pavilion to raise money for a great cause. Competition in the morning followed by an massive BBQ afterwards! In addition to the competition there will be vendor booths and a DJ…can you say dance party? I know you have been practicing your squats and rumor has it they are part of the competition. I would love to see you do your thing on the competition floor. Registration is $50 and you can check it out with here. Lets hit a PR then party! Let me know if you have any questions!
Verbiage is different starting with the greeting. Its all about the fun stuff…and less on the details. This person is prob going to forget to sign up but knows in her head she is coming. So be prepared to register to after your class one day or day of the event. Also don’t put her in heat 1, she will be late. You want her to be there because she is going to bring the energy that attracts people. She may or may not do good in the competition but she is going to have a good time and draw a crowd. Having a DJ, there she will prob dance through the whole thing. It would be worth having a costume contest just to see what she would wear.
If I were to invite a pearl:
HI Karen! How are you? Hows your new puppy? I just love the pictures you are posting about him. Living Amped is hosting a great event on Saturday, May 20th at The Pavilion (address). Our goal is to raise $10k to donate to the cause (link to cause). This is a great cause and I’m excited to team up with them because of the changes that they are doing for our world. We will have a competition in the morning followed by a BBQ with everyone immediately following. I’m reaching out to our 6am class and encouraging everyone to participate at least come hang out at the BBQ. We have been in the squat cycle for a few weeks now and I would love to test everyone’s progress. Plus I think it would be a fun thing for our class to do! Registration is $50 and you can sign up here. Let me know if you have any questions.
PS Class photo is a MUST!
Again, a different verbiage. It was more soothing, loving. I asked about her new puppy before inviting her to the event. Pearls want to know you care and it isn’t just about the money. So I elaborated on the cause and they why we are hosting the event. I talked about inviting the whole class so we can do it together and support each other and hang out afterwards at the BBQ. Pearls don’t care about winning or PRing they just want to enjoy each others company. Even if she doesn’t compete, she will volunteer at least be in the crowd cheering on her fellow classmates.
As you can see…same event…same message just worded a little different to seem more appealing to each gem. I didn’t lie to any of them I just highlighted the parts of the event that spoke to that person. This method doesn’t have be to applied when just hosting an event but in communication as a whole. If you write a Ruby a long email full of details, they are not going to read it. Take a min to highlight the important stuff, etc.
Ready to have your mind blown? Above, as well as in the picture, I organized the gems into quadrants…on purpose. Top left is ruby, top right is emerald, bottom left is sapphire, bottom right is pearl. The gems are across from their direct opposite. For example, Rubys and Pearls. Each one is bother by the other, but yet need each other especially in business. Rubys are annoyed with pearls because they are not aggressive enough and Pearls think that rubys are too aggressive and only think about winning and not the journey. Pearls need rubys to make sure they don’t just give away their product for free (because they would) and never make profit. Rubys need pearls to remind them to maintain the team environment in the office. They need them maintain relationships with clients/customers/etc. This also goes for emeralds and sapphires. They make each other NUTS! Emeralds need sapphires to remind them to have some fun and its okay to color outside of the lines. Sapphires need emeralds because they would never do anything on time.
This idea of gems is so great and easy to apply. Just identify your customers/clients as a certain gem and watch your relationship blossom! Let me know your success!
