Whats happening in September 2017

I think we can all agree that August is the Sunday of summer. September will be here in just a few short days believe it or not and i want to let you know about a few things that will be starting as early as next week….post Labor Day of course!

Staring TUESDAY SEPT. 5TH 12PM, I will be coaching a Tuesday/Thursday 12pm Conditioning Class at CrossFit Jaakarhu. Think CrossFit methodology meets bootcamp meets group fitness (minus step aerobics). What you will not see is barbells, pull ups, high level gymnastics or olympic lifting. I promise, there is a thought out method to the madness, but you will see a little bit of it all. This class is open to all levels and you do NOT have to be a member of CrossFit Jaakarhu to join. For more information go HERE or send me a message using the contact form below 🙂

Wednesday September 6th will be Day 1 of Project X. Project X is a four week program to help guide you no matter where you are on the road to health and fitness. “X” represents your why. It can be whatever you want it to be…a goal you want to achieve or a certain pair of pants you want to fit into. It can even be a feeling or an upcoming trip you are preparing for. X is up to you! Everything you need (instruction, worksheets, journals, menus, grocery list, workouts, movement videos, etc.) is found in your GUIDE.

My mom just finished week 2 and you can see her results (and a few others) as well as a Q&A I did with her regarding her experience thus far by clicking HERE.

You do not have to live in Austin to participate in this! If you do live in Austin or surrounding areas I would be more than happy to help you with your initial, 2 week and final body comps, just forward me your receipt (Karen@LivingAmped.com) and we will find a time to meet. The earlier we can get your initial body comp in the better.

Program Updates: Many have gone through Project X (formally Project Swimsuit), but lots of things have changed in the menu (we now have spices) based on the feedback you provided (Thank You). There is also a movement video library.

Mom’s 2 Week Project X Check In

Mom’s 2 Week Project X Check In

Meet My Mom!

After I created Project X,  I asked my Mom to participate to make sure things “flowed” well.At the 2 week check in period she is down:

7 pounds + 7 inches

Thats huge…go Mom! She also stated in her text with me, “Must confess that I FEEL about 200% better, too“. To me that feeling part is A LOT better than any number! I wanted to get her perspective on her experience so I interviewed her 🙂 The other date, are a few results from previous people that have gone through Project X. As always, I’m here for questions!

Please give us a little background on yourself. I am a 60 year old female. I have been up and down as far as weight loss goes…currently up. I CrossFit about 3 times a week.

Why did you start Project X? I signed up as a way to help Karen, the developer, (OK, she’s my daughter, too!) work out any glitches in the signup process. I also helped her edit, so I read every word! It seemed to be a VERY EASY plan to follow. Food choices were limited, but there was no EXACT plan to follow. If I have a butt load of chicken, I can eat it for every meal if I need to. I have also been having some knee “issues” that I’m pretty sure could be lessened by taking off some of this extra weight. What did I have to lose? How is it going for you right now? I am on day 15 and was MOST SURPRISED when I did my body comps this morning to discover that I’ve lost 7 pounds and 7 inches! I can’t wait to reevaluate in 2 more weeks!

What exactly is Project X in your words? Can you explain this for those that are unfamiliar with it? Project X is a very simple fitness plan. It reminded me of the old “Deal a Meal” cards where you choose a card from each pocket at every meal. There are 3 meals and 2 snacks every day. Each consist of a protein, a carb, and a fat. Evidence is that this combination is best for overall health. There are specific weights/measures for each portion of your meal, though. One of my problems is portion control. I will add that I have NEVER felt hungry. There are also body weight workouts. Things that can be done with no equipment (other than ordinary household items) and done anywhere. If you travel, these are great. Meal prep is encouraged, although I will confess I have done little of it. I am home most meals and measuring each time is not usually difficult. I can see, though, that it would be VERY helpful and hope to get into it soon.

How can a person benefit from Project X? The key to success in any fitness plan is planning. This lays it all out for you and gives you all the tools you need to follow.

How have you benefited from it? For the first time in a LONG time I am PLANNING. I am making sure I have the right foods available so I won’t just grab whatever is handy. 7 pounds 7 inches in 14 days! I’d say I’m benefitting from it a LOT!

Is the value worth the price point? Absolutely! Just compare it to any other plan. You get SO much for your dollars with Project X.

Would you recommend Project X to any one? YES! ANYONE. The simplicity is key. I’ve never been overwhelmed with too much to consider. Confession: I got a little bored with the food choices by about day 13…but then I was starting Week 3 and there are a whole bunch of new choices! The limits really do help you focus. Another confession: There were 2 nights where dinner was wine, cheese and crackers and one night I had to attend a “Tasting” where I ate Lord knows what. I just started fresh the next day.

Dynamax Medicine Ball Review

Dynamax Medicine Ball Review

Product Review: Why this is my favorite training tool!

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS.
Coaches and Trainers….are you currently using Dynamax Medicine Balls with your clients? If you are not, you should be. This piece of equipment is a great all around tool to use for any client/athlete no matter their ability. I was first introduced to Dynamax when I started teaching bootcamp in 2009. Little did I know that all this time later I would still be using Dynamax with my clients/athletes as well as with my workouts. As a coach that drove from location to location I wanted to bring fun equipment to my athletes but it would be a challenge due to car spacial and weight limitations, medicine balls were perfect for this. But even with indoor/in home clients, medicine ball are one of my most used pieces of equipment.

Do I specifically need the Dynamax Brand? They are kind of pricy.

In comparison to other medicine balls, Dynamax looks the same. Tough outer shell, thick stitching, clear weight label…the difference is in the quality. I took the same six Dynamax medicine balls to multiple bootcamp classes during the week for many years. My athletes would slam them down, sit on them (sometimes weighted), carry them, drop them…they would put them through the ringer and after class we would wipe them down with a disinfectant and use them again the following class. I have never had one bust on me and I would encourage my athletes to be rough on them. BUT when working at an indoor personal training studio they purchased a knock off brand and almost all of them busted and and had to be replaced. I strongly believe the higher price point is the only negative, but I would rather purchase 1 med ball than have to always replace another brand.

What can I do with them?

The possibilities are endless. Some of my favorites include:
  • Running a certain distance carrying a med ball
  • Teaching cleans
  • Ab/core exercises: weighted russian twist or weighted sit ups, planks with hand or feet on top,
  • Wall balls
  • Chest passes (with partner or against a wall)
  • Overhead throwing
Go HERE to see video’s of med ball movements that are used in my 50 Med Ball Workouts PDF which you can get below.

What is the difference in the medicine ball and the slam ball?

Outside of the physical appearance (slam balls have an rubber outer shell that is easy to grip), they are weighted differently. Slam balls are filled with sand and would be considered dead weight, where medicine balls have a little bounce when slammed/dropped and can roll when done so. Both are great training tools to use with clients.

What weight should I start with?

If done correctly you can get a great workout with just a six pound one. For my crossfitters the standards are 14 pounds for the ladies and 20 pounds for the men. More advance athletes will use a 20 pound for the females and 30 pound for the males. I would first purchase one that might be on the lighter side but you can do more with then you can advance from there based on feel and experience.

Where can I purchase a medicine ball?

Since Dynamax no longer has an actual store, I would order from Perform Better (I have always been happy with my orders from them). In addition to medicine balls, they have other equipment that might be useful for trainers or those looking to get into the industry.
