HTOWN THROW DOWN RECAP…finally
OKAY, I know I’m a little behind on this one, but it was to fun of a competition not to share! On September 20th I traveled to Houston/Spring to compete in the HTown Throw Down with the one and only, Chelsea Lewis! Chelsea is a BAD A$$ in the crossfit world and one of the top competitors in the South Central Region! Therefore when she asked me to be her partner for this comp and jumped at the opportunity. Our journey down there wan’t easy, it POURED the WHOLE way…from Austin to Spring! As if that drive is easy in beautiful weather, blah. After dinner with a dear friend from college (Tony), we arrived in Spring, at Chelsea’s house just in time to unload, discuss the workouts, decide on what time to get up in the morning, shower and hit the sack.
The next day was early to rise, kinda 🙂 We arrived at the BBVA Compass Stadium just in time for briefing and to get warmed up. Thank goodness I had pants on because it got COLD (Houston “cold”) because of the rain!
Wod 1:
5 min amrap
2-4-6-8….and so on
-full snatches (115/75) (this is to be a squat snatch or power snatch to overhead squat)
-pull ups
*with one athlete working at a time you must work your way through each set completing the number of reps. Please note that it can be broken up between each athlete anyway you choose.
We agreed for me to start on snatches and her to start on pull ups then break it up starting with 8reps. We made it 14rds and some pull ups (don’t quote me on that).
Wod 2: Max Lift (10 min running clock)
30 plate burpees (broken up however the athletes choose)
with remaining time each athlete will find a 1RM in either the clean and jerk or the snatch (each athlete must choose one)
if there is any time remaining then the tie breaker will be max triple unders
your score will be the combined total of each lift and combined triple unders
*YOU WILL BE ALLOWED TO HAVE ONLY ONE ATHLETE ATTEMPT THE TRIPLE UNDERS. BOTH ATHLETES DO NOT HAVE TO ATTEMPT THEM.
This one was kinda fun, actually…accept for the fact that they had 1 bar for us to perform both lifts on and then not enough weights. There were at least 3 platforms who were sharing a set of 2.5s and a set of 5s. It made for a VERY frantic situation, but now a very comical one. Thank goodness we knew the people who we were sharing weights with.
Chelsea finished with a snatch of 135 and I finished with a clean and Jerk of 200. That is neither one of our PRs but we will take them!
Wod 3:
7 min amrap
21 – dead lifts (225/165)
15 – wall balls (20/14)
9 – ring dips
*each round can be broken up however you choose.
This was team workout at its best! We split up the movements tho make them fluid and where we didn’t miss a beat. We worked to our strengths and powered through them all, and it was awesome! You can see how close we were.
After these 3 works we were placed at 3rd which earned us a spot in the final WOD (my favorite WOD)!
FINAL WOD
EACH teammate had to complete 100 double unders
EACH teammate had to complete a 50yrd handstand walk (one athlete must complete all 50yds before next athlete can start)
(The following reps were split between both partners)
40cal Row
30 Push Jerks
20 Front Squats
10 Toe To Bar + Chest To Bar + Bar Muscle Up Combo (each athlete had to do at least 1 combo)
We split up work and made it happen, finishing 3rd over all!
All In All it was a good competition with some good people! Following the comp we all went to dinner followed by a night in the red boots!
I am truly thankful and extremely blessed and the friendships I have developed in this sport. These are some VERY strong women, both mentally and physically. I love the push they give me and the athlete they have made me. Thank you Ladies! I look forward to seeing your face on and off the blacktop!
Thank you Chelsea for letting me compete with you, even if it meant wearing way to shorty short shorts!
I also am beyond words blessed for my support team that stand on the sidelines and motivate/encourage me to be the best I can be (on and off the black top). They are there to support me through the good, the bad and the ugly! THANK YALL!
